The food was alright. Not horrible, not super fabulous. It was good to satisfy a fish and chip craving. Probably would have been best to eat here instead of taking away.
I feel, though, that my experience was marred by a few things (which are in no way the fault of the Fish Shack):
-a bastard seagull took my barely eaten fish
-I lost my appetite after having my fish rudely snatched from my hands
-I was at Manly Beach, surrounded by tons of people and rude seagulls
-The remaining chips were eaten too quickly for fear that a-hole seagulls would take those too
So to recap:
-The food is okay
-Eat the food here, away from the evil grasp of a-hole seagulls
-Seagulls are jerks -

The Fish Shack is a solid choice for a meal, made better by its great location near the beach.
Service is very quick. We went at 1pm, so it was well staffed. Even if we needed something, it was super easy to flag someone down and they were able to get whatever we needed quickly.
It's a very casual place with a fairly casual menu, and prices start at $15 for a main up to $35 for a plate for two. On average, expect to spend $17-$18 for a main, before drinks or starters. I did love that the cocktail prices were slightly below average for the area! Most cocktails were around $14-$15. Unfortunately, I didn't partake in one to be able to tell you if they were worth the price!
We both definitely enjoyed our food. My guy said his soft shell crab was good, and I enjoyed fish and chips. It was a perfect portion, considering I was starving. The chips were actually some of the better ones I've had in this country! I liked the slightly battered taste and texture to them. The fish was super moist, and really crunchy. It might have been closer to 5 stars if the batter had more flavor. The tarter sauce was also good, and I LOVE when a place has ketchup/tomato sauce right on the table and doesn't make me pay for it. -

We sat down AND then I looked at reviews and wanted to get up BUT so glad we didn't.. it was all delicious!
First, the salmon skin was cooked crispy and delicious while the salmon was flakey and not overdone at all. The option of half fries half salad is delightful (& pretty sure Mr was happy he didn't have to share his fries!) The salad was perfectly coated with a vinagrette dressing.
Then.... the fish as chips were tender and fried perfectly!
Next the Dutch waiter nice too!
Bathrooms were gross... but food awesome! -

We came in and were the only table but it came recommended by friends. I got the barramundi fish & chips and it was decent I added some salt and the tartar sauce helped. A little pricey for what you get but it is a tourist spot. Staff seemed nice enough, food came out in a reasonable amount of time.

Ate outside and watched the surfers as we ate. The staff wasn't very helpful but I must say the clam chowder is some of the best I have ever tasted!!! Other than that, the food was mediocre plus with the staff being average at best, we gave it three stars. For my American friends... we went on a Sunday... it was our first time eating out in Australia.... they charged a Sunday convenience fee... $$2.50 per pers
